If you’ve attended many weddings lately, you will notice that ceremonies are no longer just your typical church wedding.

There are 2 types of unity ceremonies that you could have at your wedding – The Unity Sand Ceremony & The Unity Candle Ceremony. These ceremonies are both non-denominational, which means they have no religious significance. Some couples choose to have a special song played while they are performing these ceremonies. You can also choose to have a special poem read or you can choose to have a moment of silence.

The Unity Sand Ceremony is ideal for a beach wedding or for a couple that both enjoy the sea and sand, but can be used at any type of wedding. It is a short celebration that symbolises the joining of two lives. The couple ceremoniously pours various colours of sand from separate containers, such as seashells or glass jugs, into one special container symbolizing their coming together as one. The flowing sand and blending of the colours symbolize the bringing together of two lives into one. It is considered a bit more special than a candle ceremony, as it creates a lasting keepsake of that special day.

The Unity Sand Ceremony can also be altered in many ways to include family and friends. Besides the bride and groom, various colours of sand are given to wedding members who will add their sand to the couple’s sand, all flowing into the container, creating a colourful and one-of-a kind symbol of unity.

The Unity Candle Ceremony has long been a tradition for marriages both elaborate and simple. Usually, there is a single candle that both bride and groom light from a flame of their own separate candles. Parents or other members of the wedding party can join in the candle lighting ceremony. Lighting of the Unity Candle symbolizes the new union of a husband and wife, two individuals who are becoming one through marriage.

Whatever your dream wedding entails, incorporating the Unity Sand Ceremony or the Candle Ceremony into the celebration, you can be sure to create memories that your guests will talk about for a long time after your special day.
